Final Project!

 Hi everyone!

The parts of McLuhan's book that inspired this project were pages 152 to 155 and the idea of allatonceness described on page 63 as " Ours is a brand new world of allatonceness. "Time" has ceased, "space" has vanished. We now live in a global village...a simultaneous happening." This idea of allatonceness combined with the imagery on pages 152 to 155 made me think of connection not only in an electronic sense, but also in the way that humans are naturally social creatures and thus cannot exist without connection.

Pages 152-155 quote Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland , specifically the scene of the smoking worm asking Alice "Who are you?" and her responding "I-I hardly know, sir, just at present - at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then" Depicted around the quote in addition to illustration of the Alice in Wonderland scene are figureheads with numbers instead of faces. They crowd the pages, and this gave me that allatonceness feeling. It got me thinking about how everyone is connected by interactions and relationships that change us.

I, with the help of friends and professors, distributed these instructions to everyone I could across campus.

Hello! You are invited to participate in my art project!

My name is Lucy Jones and I’m doing an art project about kindness and gratitude for my class Art in New Media.

As the pressure of assignments and grading is imminent, I propose a simple activity to boost morale. It is as follows and should only take up a few minutes of class time!

 STEP 1!

Choose one or more of the following to do today.

 • Take scraps of paper and write compliments on them to give out to classmates or friends.

 • LU –specific! Send an email, write a note and leave it at their office, or show up to the office hours of your favorite professors and tell them how much you appreciate them!

 • Tell a staff person you see doing their job "Thank you for the work you do"

 • Write a letter to the person that influenced you the most, then call them and read the letter aloud to them.

 • If you want to compliment a stranger, politely approach and say something along the lines of “Excuse me, I just wanted to say that *insert compliment here*”

 STEP 2!

In whatever form you like, commemorate your experience and send it to jonesl@lawrence.edu (Can be a photo, a couple sentences, a drawing, etc..)

Of course I also participated and am happy to report I got sent other people's stories/experiences as well! Most in the form of photos of notes, letters, or gifted objects.

I compiled the photos onto a slide to create a visual, but the objective was to make art out of the relationships between people and spread good feelings, which I achieved.

I've been asked a couple times if it's too late to participate in the project, so I've decided to continue it in perpetuity.

Best,
Lucy Jones
