Soundscape Blog Post

Hi everyone! Unfortunately, I am sick right now so I won't be in class to present my soundscape, but I can post and talk about it here. Here's the link Lucy Jones audio | Listen on audio.com    If it doesn't work let me know! Revised link: https://audio.com/lucy-jones-4/audio/voicemail-81b576d9-6f78-5fc1-8c40-e223a729203e-1  The McLuhan quote I thought of when creating this is on page 118 where he writes: ""Speak that I may see you" Electronically recorded voiceprints, like fingerprints, are now being accepted as evidence by some courts. Five people were asked to say "you". One was asked to repeat it. Which two voiceprints were made by the same speaker?"  In thinking of everyday and everything we do as music; I downloaded the last voicemail I got from my grandfather before he passed away. It'll be five years ago this Summer. Hearing his voice again is strange after helping my mom cancel his subscriptions and call everyone saved in his blac...

Blurb book layout

Image
Hi everyone! I set up my photobook simply, with just the images for now. I have yet to put in the titles of the photos or descriptions because I can't decide how much I want to leave up to interpretation by the viewer. I think it's more fun to not have all the info on a photo because you get to imagine the story behind it. However, without an interesting description or something eye catching, I worry that the viewers won't be drawn in at all. But who is my audience, really? Since I'm doing this for a class is it supposed to appeal to me, my professor, and/or my fellow students? I also hadn't considered that I would need a design for the front/back plus inside covers! So right now I just have my photos loosely paired and taking up the whole page with no titles/descriptions, but I'll make it more aesthetically pleasing in the next couple days.

Flickr Project Reflection

Hi everyone! Honestly, I really procrastinated doing this project. Doing the readings was fun for me, but actually taking the photos felt daunting. I kept prioritizing other things, and it made me anxious about if I was going to finish the project on time. However inefficient, I found inspiration in that process of procrastination. What McLuhan was saying on page 92 about environment and separation, antisocial behavior, visual rhyming, and amateurism popped into my head while I was on a walk around midnight last night. I had spent an hour or two with people pre-gaming and going bar hopping, but I left early because I felt childish for being sober. Bless their hearts they were very kind and didn't pressure me at all! I just spent my time looking around and feeling like by not drinking I was engaged in some sort of antisocial behavior. Not that sobriety is anything special; I just felt like every place we went had a visual rhyme to them, and in those environments, I was out of place...

"We'll keep ya 'round" short video

We'll keep ya 'round! Hi! Okay so my whole approach to this project was pretty all over the place. With such broad concepts like time and space I had no idea what I wanted to do for this video. I tried filming myself and trying some tiktok style transitions, but it just didn't feel right. I felt lost, so I went into my camera roll and found these two videos. On page 63 McLuhan writes: " "time" has ceased, "space" has vanished. We now live in a global village...a simultaneous happening." and not only does this apply to memories, especially nostalgic ones involving family, that gradually change over time it also connects to the unique backstory of these videos.  On my family's ranch we don't have internet and some other modern amenities because of how remote it is. So, the ranch is naturally, and was for a very long time, outside of the internet. It only existed in memories and photos, because that's the only thing your phone was go...

About me

Image
Hi everyone! My name is Lucy Jones and I'm a junior majoring in art history with a focus on museum studies and minoring in French. This term I'm doing an academic internship for credit and working as a gallery guard at the wriston art galleries on campus and working at the circulation desk at the Mudd library. My classes are: this new media art class, intro to the art museum, and my capstone course. I'm doing my capstone early so I can study abroad in Paris, France for the academic year. In my free time I love to take walks, listen to music, and talk/hang out with my friends.  I don't consider myself an artist, but I love learning about how and why artists create art. Over the course of this class I hope to have fun creating things and become more tech-savvy.  A McLuhan quote that intrigues me is " All media are extensions of some human faculty- psychic or physical." (McLuhan, 26) Over the next couple pages he includes blown up images of body parts like toes,...
